LETTER TO THE EDITOR

We must also support the rights of the already-born

To The Editor:

Rightly did Bishop Tobin voice his concern lest he or any of us have to give an account to God for our responsibility in the death of an innocent human being. Surely, he would have us understand that such a concern for the innocent extends to all the innocent lives that are destroyed by the action or lack of action on our part.

I cannot help but think of the over 30,000 children who die each day in our world because of hunger and the consequences of hunger.

I cannot help but think of the millions of children who will not receive even a primary school education unless we provide it for them.

I cannot help but think of the millions of refugees who languish in camps under the worst of conditions.

I cannot help but think of the innocent young men and women we send off to wars that clearly are unjust.

I cannot help but think of our prison systems, which smack of discrimination and injustice.

I cannot help but think of our immigration attitude that is so clearly opposed to the mandate “to love our neighbor.”

None of these conditions, and so many more that cry out for justice, are easily fixed. But do we not have to look into our souls when, while crying out for justice for the unborn, we overlook the plight of the born? Fighting for the cause of the innocent unborn in most instances carries no more cost than our shouting does. Fighting for the cause of justice for the born most often requires us to dig into our pockets and part with some of our wealth. It is much easier to be a protester than a provider.
