Father Daniel Trainor, Community Service and Charitable Outreach

Father Daniel Trainor has served the people of Assumption Parish for more than 30 years. In that span of time, he saw the West End of Providence change in drastic ways, said Father Robert Hawkins, pastor of St. Luke’s Parish in Barrington, who nominated Father Trainor for a Lumen Gentium Award in the category of Community Service and Charitable Outreach.

To meet their needs, Father Trainor started the Genesis School with Sister Angela Daniels. The school helped to ease the transition of immigrants from Latin America and Southeast Asia into American life.

At Assumption Parish, Father Trainor has led numerous ministries that fed and clothed the needy, Father Hawkins added. In addition, he joined with members of the community to address the issue of gang violence.

“So many people, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, saw him to be a beacon of light and justice in the community,” said Father Hawkins. “Among his peers in the Catholic priesthood he is admired and respected. He has served on the personnel board, priest council and countless other committees. For decades he has been the model of priestly ministry and integrity.”

“Now, in his senior years, he does what he can to promote the various ministry initiatives of the Diocese. I feel Father Trainor should be recognized and lauded for his efforts to promote Christ’s Kingdom of peace and justice.”

Father Trainor shared that he is very happy and surprised by this honor.

“I see it as a recognition of the ministry I did at Assumption where I found it important to bring the love of Christ to bear in people where it may not have been present,” he said.
