Mary A. Lavin, 99

NEWPORT — Mary A. Lavin, 99, of St. Clare Home, Newport, formerly of Cranston, died Sept. 12. She was the wife of the late John J. Lavin, and the mother of Father John J. Lavin of Cranston, pastor emeritus of St. Joseph Church, Newport.

Born in Kilsallagh, County Mayo, Ireland, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Sarah (Sammon) Conway.

She traveled to the United States when she was 17 years old, and resided in Lowell, Mass., before moving to Rhode Island in 1937. She was employed with the Newport School Lunch Program for 20 years and also worked as a domestic in many homes in the Newport area. She was a former parishioner of St. Matthew’s Church in Cranston.

In addition to Father Lavin, she is survived by another son, Kevin P. Lavin of Narragansett; two granddaughters; a brother, Timothy Conway of Kilsallagh, Ireland; and a sister, Anne Cunnion of Florida.

She was the sister of the late Bridget O’Connor, Sarah Murphy, Catherine Tuite, Society of African Missions Father Michael J. Conway and Peter Conway.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 16 in St. Joseph Church, Newport.
