LETTER TO THE EDITOR

How would local politicians respond to Bishop Tobin?

To the Editor:

I would like to compliment the Rhode Island Catholic for its very informative articles. I truly enjoyed the imaginary question and answer interview that Bishop Tobin has with President Obama in the February 17th issue.

I found Bishop Tobin’s questions to be very relevant and President Obama’s “answers” to be very close to what he would have replied as he is a liberal democrat. Also, on page 5 of that issue, there was an interesting piece by Brian J. Lowney about Senator John McBurney III. The article mentioned how the influence of Catholic education impacted his personal and professional life. The article did not mention his party affiliation. The fact that Senator McBurney is the longest serving legislator currently holding office in the General Assembly and serves as President Protempore of the Senate, I would have to assume that he is a democrat. If I am mistaken then I stand corrected. If Senator McBurney is a democrat as is President Obama, I wonder how differently he and other Catholic Democrats would have answered Bishop Tobin’s questions.

Could the R.I. Catholic newspaper take a poll to see how each Catholic senator and representative voted on legislation concerning abortion and Planned Parenthood?
