LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Freedom comes from God not government

Posted

TO THE EDITOR:

Imagine my surprise at reading Deacon Dominic Diorio's letter that deep down I really do not believe in God or his teachings and that I am gambling with my eternity.

It seems the God of Deacon Diorio dabbles in U.S. politics, mine does not. Certainly we must support those politicians who espouse the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church, however being of one political party or another does not in itself guarantee they will follow through, anymore than simply reciting the creed at Mass guarantees that one is a Christian. We have had Democrat and Republican controlled Senates, Houses and even the White House and yet we continue to murder our unborn children and call it choice.

Perhaps freedom comes from the government. I however remember reading that "we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights...". My rights come from God. They can not be taken away by any form of government nor can they be taken away by big business. It seems that if God is not your center then there are two choices, big government or big business. I choose God who is bigger than any politician, CEO, government or business.

I will continue to vote with an informed Christ-centered conscience regardless of political affiliation. I will continue to work out my salvation with fear and trembling but also the joy of the many times I have confessed my sins and received the sacrament of reconciliation. I do not presume the grace of God any more than I presume that God will punish anyone other than myself.

We are called to pray for those who persecute us. To pray for those who oppose the things of God, for only God can change a heart. We are instruments, tools of God's love. Tools are useless unless they are in the hands of a skilled craftsman. God is the master craftsman. My God strives that all people should be saved, in fact he gave his only begotten Son for that purpose.
