Culture of death lives with Sebelius nomination

Posted

President Obama is keeping his promises to many special interest groups that supported his candidacy. None more than the advocates of abortion and agents of the culture of death.

Having already overturned the Mexico City policy and pledging his loyal support to the United Nations Population Fund, President Obama now wants to rescind the rule issued in December by the Department of Health and Human Services that protect the rights of health care workers who refuse to perform or be involved in medical procedures - such as abortion - that violate their conscience. Concerns about these attacks upon the culture of life by the new administration have become heightened by the proposed appointment of the radically pro-abortion Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to be the Secretary of Health and Human Services and oversee such health care policies across the nation.

The Kansas governor is a Catholic and well known for her ties to the notorious late-term abortionist Dr. George Tiller. As Governor of Kansas she vetoed legislation that would have stopped late-term abortions and impeded the investigation of Dr. Tiller’s horrific practice of late term abortion. If confirmed by the Senate as the HHS Secretary, Gov. Sebelius would have the authority to issue regulations that would undermine pro-life policies and eliminate conscience protections for Catholic and other pro-life medical professionals. Not surprisingly she has garnered the support of the radical abortion lobby and also Catholics United who claim that she “has made clear that she agrees with church teaching that abortion is wrong and has lived and acted according to that belief. As governor, she has worked to reduce the number of abortions by supporting expanded prenatal care and adoption incentives, expanding health services for Kansas families, and providing a variety of support services for families.” Catholics United is not an official Catholic group but rather a group of liberal Catholics formed to provide cover for pro-abortion policymakers such as President Obama under the guise of promoting “social justice and the common good.”

Despite the dubious recommendation by groups such as Planned Parenthood and Catholics United, Gov. Sebelius was both privately and publicly challenged by Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City for her support of radical pro-abortion policies. Citing her “30 year history of advocating and acting in support of legalized abortion” the Archbishop asked the governor to refrain from receiving Communion until she disavows her support of the “serious moral evil” of abortion. She has refused to do so and has continued to be steadfast in her strong support of abortion.

We strongly oppose the nomination of Gov. Sebelius because of her long history of supporting the culture of death and her avowed support of abortion. The Senate has a chance to reject the radical pro-abortion policies of Gov. Sebelius and President Obama by voting against her confirmation as the Secretary of HHS. We urge them to stand against the culture of death and reject Gov. Sebelius. We remind President Obama, Gov. Sibelius and Catholics United of the prophetic words of the late Pope John Paul II: “A nation that kills its own children is a nation without hope.”
