PROVIDENCE — In a colorful and culturally rich celebration, the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul hosted the diocesan Mass on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. The Mass, celebrated by Bishop Richard G. Henning, brought together a diverse congregation to commemorate the beloved Virgin Mary with fervent prayers, joyful performances and reflections on her significant titles.
The evening commenced with the Holy Rosary, confession and a serenade dedicated to the Virgin Mary. As the faithful gathered, the cathedral transformed into a vibrant scene, adorned with a fusion of traditional Aztec attire and symbolic performances. Attendees, donned in costumes representing different native tribes gave glory to Almighty God through prayer and thanksgiving.
Bishop Henning’s homily was a journey through three litanies associated with the Holy Rosary and the novena leading up to the Mass. Focusing on the titles “Mary, Ark of the Covenant,” “Mary, Tower of David,” and “Mary, Morning Star,” the Bishop connected these ancient monikers to the role of the Virgin Mary in salvation history.
The analogy of Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant was deeply explored, highlighting her pivotal role in carrying Jesus Christ, our Savior. The imagery of Mary as the Tower of David resonated as a place of refuge and protection for believers. Finally, the Morning Star symbolized the heralding of a new day — the Good News brought by Mary.
At the Mass, some of the faithful also expressed their prayer and thanksgiving in Aztec attire, showcasing a rich tapestry of symbols and meanings. The costumes, including Maxtla (loincloth), Tilma (cape), Xicolli (vest), and Huitl (feathers), were vibrant in color
In the words of Celso Vera, coordinator of the diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry, the event aimed to bring people together in faith and devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The combination of prayer, reflection and vibrant cultural expressions made this Mass a memorable experience for all who attended.
