PROVIDENCE — The Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul was filled with a sense of anticipation and joy on Dec. 3, from 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. as participants of all ages gathered for an Advent Day of Recollection.
The event welcomed quite a few new members to the Cathedral parish, including one woman who recently moved to Providence to support her daughter after the passing of her husband a few years ago. She had joined the Cathedral parish just two years prior, emphasizing the inclusive and welcoming nature of the parishioners.
Approximately 30 individuals, many attending for the first time, came together to engage in a day filled with spiritual enrichment. Msgr. Anthony Mancini, rector of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul delivered a powerful talk on the theme, “The Season of Advent is the Season of Hope,” emphasizing the profound need for hope in the world today.
Msgr. Mancini challenged attendees to turn to the scriptures for guidance, urging self-reflection on how the teachings apply to their lives and situations. He emphasized that suffering is a tool for spiritual growth and a means to reunite with Jesus. He reminded the audience that by clinging to Jesus, fear has no place in their hearts.
Sister Elizabeth Castro, H.M.S.P., director of the Office of Religious for the Diocese of Providence, delivered a talk at the Advent retreat focusing on “The Mercy of God” through the parable of the Prodigal Son. Her presentation highlighted the importance of God’s gift of mercy, emphasizing the compassion that opens hearts to his loving care and guidance. Throughout her talk, she shared quotes from the apostle of Mercy, Saint Faustina Kowlaska, providing valuable insights into the theme of her presentation.
The Cathedral Day of Recollection served as a meaningful and reflective way for the community to enter the Advent season. It provided a space for newcomers and seasoned members alike to come together, share in spiritual teachings, and find solace in the hope and mercy offered by the Christmas season. As the participants left the cathedral, there was a collective sense of gratitude for a day well spent in communion with faith and community.
“I have been looking forward to this since the day I found out about it. What a perfect way to start Advent!” an attendee from St. Pius V Parish said.
