LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A candidate’s view

TO THE EDITOR:

Although I have met many of your readers on the campaign trail, I am grateful for this chance to address some of the most crucial issues in this election and introduce myself to those I’ve not had the pleasure of meeting.

I’m running for Congress so that my daughters will have the same great opportunities that I did. Our country is on the wrong track - government spending is out of control, taxes are going up and the health care legislation rammed through Congress will hurt seniors and cost more than our current system. I am the only pro-life candidate in the race. I believe that life is precious and that we need to protect the unborn.

I was raised in Portsmouth and graduated from Lincoln High School. I was active in the Boy Scouts of America and am a proud Eagle Scout. I am a veteran, a small businessman, a three-term state legislator, a father and husband. I enlisted in the Rhode Island National Guard just after high school and retired as a Lt. Colonel (USAR) in 2004. I was mobilized twice - once to Bosnia and again to help train troops preparing to go into Iraq. My wife Susan and I have two wonderful daughters, Victoria and Carrie. Victoria has recently begun law school and Carrie is a student in the Tiverton public school system.

I would also like your readers to know that my opponent, Mayor David Cicilline, has been trying to scare seniors into voting for him. I believe that Social Security needs to be protected and we need to take steps to ensure that the system is improved for future generations.

I respectfully ask for your vote on November 2.

John J. Loughlin II

Tiverton, R.I.
