PAWTUCKET — Signs of gratitude adorned the gymnasium walls of St. Raphael Academy on Sunday, Jan. 26 as players and coaches of St. Margaret, St. Teresa and St. Luke joined a state-wide “Thank-A-Ref Weekend” to pay tribute to officials whose hard work and dedication make a difference in the lives of student athletes in the Diocese of Providence.
Striving to maintain sportsmanship, safety and a sense of community, these referees play a crucial role that is not always recognized. This past Sunday, Catholic Athletic League (CAL) teams acknowledged the impact referees have with a special presentation of speeches and gifts.
CAL Director Ben Gorewitz shared that each year, the league takes a moment to extend heartfelt gratitude to the basketball referees through the “Thank-A-Ref Weekend.”

“As the season progresses, it’s easy to let the intensity of the game overshadow our appreciation for their crucial role,” said Gorewitz. “This weekend, at the midpoint of the season, schools and parishes pause to extend Christian gratitude to these dedicated individuals. Without their commitment and expertise, we wouldn’t be able to have a safe and enjoyable season.”
Through CAL, a ministry of the Diocese of Providence, love of God and the love of the game go hand-in-hand, as coaches and officials support young athletes in virtue and prayer through sport.
Throughout his 23 years of coaching, St. Teresa head coach P.J. Shea has seen the referees’ efforts as a gift for the youth. He expressed his great appreciation for the impact referees have on developing the youth’s attitudes by ensuring the events of the game stay “centered around Catholic values.”
This is the 41st year of refereeing for David Barbour of North Attleboro who brought a warm smile to the day’s events.
“The game is for the kids, and it is great to be part of it,” he said.
