St. Pius V School in Providence is taking part in a 4-month course using the Air Force Association’s Cyberpatriot program. Under the leadership of CW3 Johan Calderon (MS, Cyber Security, MS, IT Management) and 1SG Shayne Chapman (MS, IT Management), five students are participating in the afterschool program, culminating in a spot in the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The first competition took place online on October 29, 2021. The students use virtual machines and are in charge of securing virtual networks. They are studying Windows, Linux and Cisco Networking platforms, and gain points as vulnerabilities are patched. Cyberpatriot currently has 519 middle school teams, and a total of 3,315 teams competing worldwide.
