St. Mary Academy – Bay View Appoints John Sung, Accomplished Lacrosse Coach, as Director of Athletics

RIVERSIDE — St. Mary Academy – Bay View, announced the appointment of John Sung as its new Director of Athletics and Strategic Programs. With a 24-year career in collegiate athletics and a passion for student development, Sung is set to lead the school's sports programs.
 
“Coach Sung’s impressive track record as both a coach and an administrator is matched by his passion for developing student-athletes as leaders on and off the field,” said Amy Gravell ('93), President of Bay View. “His vision will strengthen our school spirit, build community, and create exciting new opportunities for our students. We are thrilled to welcome him.”
 
In his new role, Sung will manage the school’s 16-sport athletic program, which was recently named one of the top 25 in Rhode Island by USA Today. He will also be responsible for developing strategic initiatives to enrich student life and advance the school's mission.

Bay View has a proud tradition of empowering young women, and I look forward to building a championship culture rooted in integrity, growth, and excellence.”
 
Sung's primary focus will be on recruiting and retaining exceptional coaches, forging meaningful partnerships, and ensuring every student has the chance for a rewarding athletic experience.
 
Before coming to Bay View, Sung was the interim director of athletics at Nova Southeastern University and the head women's lacrosse coach and assistant athletic director at Carthage College. His career also includes a notable five-year tenure at Virginia Tech, where he became the most successful coach in the program’s history with 45 victories.
 
During his time at Virginia Tech, Sung coached four All-American’s; five Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Region selections; 10 All-Conference honorees; and two training members of Team USA. The IWLCA also recognized his teams with academic honor roll awards from 2017 to 2021.
 
Sung will oversee all aspects of the athletic department, including coaching, facilities, and strategic planning. The school's athletic philosophy emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and a balanced approach to academics and competition.
 
This year's Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, guided by Sung, will celebrate those who have championed women’s athletics and lived out the Mercy values of the Bay View community. 
 
The induction ceremony is slated for Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at 6:30 p.m., during Homecoming Weekend. The entire Bay View family is invited to attend and recognize these outstanding individuals and teams for their dedication, leadership, and sportsmanship.
