Students at The Prout School in Wakefield raised $1,000 to benefit the Diocese of Providence’s support for Hurricane Ian relief efforts. The strong Category 4 storm ravaged Florida’s Southwest Coast and inland areas after coming ashore on Sept. 28, leaving more than 100 people dead in its wake and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
Bishop Thomas J. Tobin authorized a special diocesan collection in support of disaster relief efforts with funds raised being directed to Catholic Charities USA, the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church.
Prout religion and music teacher Phil Faraone suggested to his junior class students ways they could make a difference by aiding the relief fund and the students raised the funds over the course of two to three weeks. They placed a donation box at Homecoming Day, and sold bracelets each day at lunch. Bishop Tobin thanked all the students at Prout for their efforts.
“The monetary gifts are really important but your personal support of these folks who’ve suffered so much and your spiritual support really makes all the difference for them. So thank you for that and please extend to all the other students back at The Prout School my personal appreciation because I know a lot of people were involved in this,” Bishop Tobin said.
