PROVIDENCE — La Salle Academy announced last week that the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has recognized one of their students, William B. Bartel, as a semifinalist in this year’s competition. Bartel is one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists who will compete for one of the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships.
According to the school, to be named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist is a great achievement, especially considering the rigor and competition in schools across the country.
“William’s exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies paired with his values, character and leadership are a tremendous source of pride for our school community,” La Salle Academy shared in a release.
As a semifinalist, Bartel will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. More than 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
