From the Coast to the Capital: Rhode Island Catholics Mark Holy Week

Posted

This week, the faithful across the Diocese of Providence gather to observe Holy Week, commemorating the Paschal Mystery and the salvtion won for us by Christ. The week began with Palm Sunday celebrations at St. Thomas More Church in Narragansett and a procession through the streets of Providence led by St. Mary’s on Broadway. This spirit of devotion continued with a powerful performance of the Living Stations of the Cross by the students of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in East Greenwich, who offered a moving, visual meditation on the Passion.

On Monday, the diocesan Church gathered for the Chrism Mass held at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul. Bishop Bruce Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., blessed and consecrated the three holy oils—the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Sacred Chrism—which will be distributed to every parish in the state for the coming year's sacraments. At this Mass, the priests also publicly renew the promises they made at their ordination.
