Followers of Christ should not accept that anyone go hungry

TO THE EDITOR:

I am writing to take exception to the editorial “Work Requirements have a Theological Basis,” (June 15).
As the editorial notes there is much in Scripture and Church teaching about the purpose of work including our role in continuing our part in developing the world created by God and placed in our care.
However, the federal debt relief reduction in SNAP benefits creates an impossible choice for some parents and guardians who may have to choose between paying rent or feeding their children. Unable to attain jobs that pay sufficient income or to find work, they need to have assistance for the necessities of life.
I believe all of us appreciate the importance and dignity of work, but l cannot believe that God intends or we as followers of Christ should accept that anyone should go hungry.
