Bishop Richard G. Henning installed Father Christoper Mahar as pastor of St. Augustine Parish, Providence, on Sunday, Nov. 26. In his homily, the bishop spoke of the enormity of the responsibilities Father Mahar will face as shepherd of one of the largest parishes in the diocese.

“Father Mahar, as the new pastor of this beautiful parish you are a spiritual father,” Bishop Henning said. “And your first task, of course, is to listen to the voice of the shepherd, to know him and to hear him in your heart, so he may make of you not a man of worldly authority, but one of that compassion, that love which is God’s power. You will do many things in this parish. There are demands on you every day, but the heart of the matter is that you are called to be a father to your people.”
