LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Catholics must restore their reputation as a caring community of believers

TO THE EDITOR:

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ opposition to President Trump’s immigration policies (“Vance spars with US bishops …” 1/30/25) is too little and much too late. The 2025 Report, prepared for the Trump administration, clearly outlined the steps they would take on a variety of issues but still many church officials spoke glowingly of the ticket and pollsters estimated that 60% of Catholics voted for this team.
In addition to cruel immigration policies that don’t distinguish law-abiding legal immigrants from criminals, this administration is now eliminating food aid that goes to the neediest of countries experiencing famine. Catholics have much work ahead of them as they try to restore their reputation as a caring community of believers. Maybe it is time to bring back the “WWJD” bracelets…what would Jesus do?
