Catholic First

Posted

Daniel Lipinski is an eight-term Democratic Congressman from the state of Illinois. He’s also a pro-life Catholic.  In an interview he gave a few weeks ago with the Catholic News Agency, Lipinski made the astute observation that in contemporary American society “more and more people are making their political party their religion.”  This religious fervor in the world of politics has made us a deeply divided nation on many issues of importance.  In the midst of all the chaos caused by this division, Lipinski says that “the most important thing is [for us] to be Catholic first.” He continues, “If we’re truly going to be Catholic, we should make sure that we put our Catholic beliefs, and how that moves us when we enter the public sphere — we should put that before partisanship. And I’m just concerned that people are not doing that.”

His concern is one which is shared by many Catholics in our country right now.

We need to pray that more Catholics — on both sides of the aisle — who are currently serving in public life, will heed Congressman Lipinski’s wise and deeply insightful words.
