EAST PROVIDENCE — St. Mary Academy - Bay View has announced that Jennifer Wasson, Director of Athletics, has been recognized by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) as a 2023 NIAAA State Award of Merit recipient.
The State Award of Merit is selected and presented annually in each state. It is an award presented to an NIAAA member who demonstrates outstanding leadership and meritorious service and achievement in the vocation of interscholastic administration. Selections and presentations are made in each state by the Athletic Administrator Association.
In a letter from the RIIAAA Executive Director, Wasson is applauded for her dedicated work in education-based athletics, both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. Wasson now joins an elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nationwide who have received the honor.
Since joining the Bay View community in 2015 as the Director of Athletics, Ms. Wasson has been the embodiment of an athletic administrator, providing leadership and displaying an eagerness to improve her league and the school consistently. Jennifer has overseen 20 Middle and High School sports teams, coached basketball in both divisions, and taught Lower School physical education. She has also worked with the Academy’s athletic support organization, the Bengal Backers, to raise more than $75,000.
In 2015, Wasson became a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and the Rhode Island Athletic Administrators Association. After earning her CAA (Certified Athletic Administration) in 2019, Jennifer served on the RIIAAA Executive Board and was voted President-Elect of the organization. Active in both the RIIAAA and NIAAA organizations, Jennifer has served on the ByLaws Committee, Coaches Association Committee, Transfer Rule Committee, and Awards Committee.
In January of 2023, Jennifer completed the requirements to earn her CMAA (Certified Masters of Athletic Administration), which is currently under review and awaiting acceptance by the NIAAA.
Before Bay View, Ms. Wasson served as an assistant coach in Division I NCAA women’s basketball for nineteen years. She began her transition into athletic administration at Providence College as the Director of Women’s Basketball Administration.
