LETTER TO THE EDITOR

What is ‘broken’ in the system

Posted

TO THE EDITOR:

Filling almost half a page – on two different pages, the 7 February Rhode Island Catholic has words about immigration. I read and read, but found nothing specific about what is wrong with our present immigration laws.

There is no way to form any reasonable opinion on what was presented. Maybe I could ask some very simple questions that are relevant:

Is there, or is there not – a legal process in place today that offers a path to citizenship?

What, specifically is ‘broken’ in the system? (again, specifics matter)

The focus on the Hispanics interests me. Does the ethnic background of an immigrant matter in this debate? Are we not to be blind to such things?

Does it, or should it, matter to Catholics that an action is ‘bipartisan’? Shouldn’t we unite behind what is right – blind to political parties?

Without the article identifying any but emotional objections to the present system, I am left to wonder what I should support.
