LETTER TO THE EDITOR

What if every parish could sponsor houses for the poor?

To the Editor:

In the July 7 issue of Rhode Island Catholic there was a heart-wrenching article with pictures of the devastation to the people of Cabaret, Haiti after a flash flood.

It mentioned that the "Food for the Poor" Foundation is soliciting donations to rebuild the lives of these extremely poor people. It stated it would cost only $2,600 to build a house for a family.

I have an idea –– a suggestion, really: How would it be if each parish in the Diocese of Providence raised $2,600 towards building a house? That would be quite a number of houses.

It's hard for one person to pledge $174 a month for 15 months. I know my husband and I definitely couldn't do that, even for one month! That is probably true for many others.

But collectively, as a parish, it seems more feasible. How about that? And what better time to start than now, during Lent? It would be a wonderful opportunity to do something instead of just "giving up" something. If we in R.I. did this, maybe other dioceses might follow.

Remember, Jesus said, "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me."

Thank you for a great paper.
