Vote Yes on Question 7

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in their statement, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, clearly state that “the lack of safe, affordable housing requires a renewed commitment to increase the supply of quality housing and to preserve, maintain, and improve existing housing through public/private partnerships, especially with religious groups and community organizations.”

Rhode Islanders – notably Catholics – have a unique opportunity to put faith into action by voting YES on Question 7 this November.

The Ocean State continues to whirl in economic decline and financial crisis. A foreclosure crisis, high unemployment and rental costs that continue to climb hurt the poor and economically struggling greater than most Rhode Islanders. Question 7, the housing-bond issue for $25 million, will lead to the construction and rehabilitation of hundreds of affordable homes over the next two years. The sale of the bonds would assist low-income individuals and families to obtain decent homes while helping to strengthen the still struggling Ocean State economy.

The reduction of public debt is a very real concern for our state but these bonds will reinvigorate the local economy by increasing tax revenues from new economic activity and raising the quality of life for many Rhode Islanders in need. Question 7 would more than pay back the citizens of the Ocean State and provides the dignity that home ownership brings to many fellow citizens. We urge all Rhode Islanders especially Catholics to vote YES on Question 7 and begin a “renewed commitment” to affordable housing for all Rhode Islanders.
