'True Common Core is communion with Christ,' says bishop at symposium

Hundreds of Catholic educators from the Diocese of Providence came together for a daylong symposium at the Crowne Plaza on Friday, March 13, to discuss the fundamental elements of a great Catholic school: communion, community, culture and curriculum.

Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans, who began the day by leading the faithful educators in the celebration of Mass, suggested that the true common core is communion with Christ. The bishop also shared his heartfelt support for Catholic education in the diocese.

“I realize that you have many challenges in your profession, but may I respectfully suggest that you also view it as a vocation, as a way of fulfilling your purpose in life by sharing the splendor of the truth with young minds and hearts,” Bishop Evans said. “How satisfying it is to know that you have made a difference, and that difference may be what helps keep the next generation on that straight and narrow path to the Kingdom of God. Thank you for your commitment to your profession, for your dedication to your faith and for your love for God’s children entrusted to your care and formation.”

Superintendent of Schools Daniel Ferris said that the symposium is a day to step back and reflect on the mission of Catholic educators. “It is one day during the course of the year where we leave our school buildings and come together as principals and teachers and celebrate the Eucharist together, a great source of our unity, our strength, our purpose and our mission.”
