The recently introduced No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act would make permanent and expand the Hyde Amendment restrictions on the use of federal funds for abortions.
It seeks to prohibit even indirect funding streams that may potentially come in contact with abortion services. Richard Doerflinger, associate director of the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops when testifying in favor of the proposed legislation aptly stated: “The federal government should not use tax dollars to support or promote elective abortion.”
Since 1976 the Hyde Amendment has ensured that federal tax dollars are not used to fund abortions. Over these many years Congress has been consistent in approving this measure in honor of the late pro-life champion and Congressman Henry Hyde from Illinois. Unfortunately, loopholes and gaps were discovered. This new legislation would make permanent and consistent an effective policy stopping the federal funding of abortion across the board in all instances and for all federal agencies.
The time has come to completely and permanently end all taxpayer funding of abortion. Each year, Planned Parenthood and others in the abortion industry receive millions of dollars to promote their destructive agenda. Not one dollar of taxpayer money should ever again be used to end the life of an innocent, unborn child. The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act is a reasonable measure that maintains longstanding polices that prohibit the active promotion of abortion by government- funded agencies. Our federal government should be in the business of encouraging childbirth and life rather than ending it through abortion. Indeed the time has come to make this policy clear, consistent and permanent.
We urge Congressmen Langevin and Cicciline to join the over 200 co-sponsors of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act and stop tax dollars from funding abortion and killing the future of our country.
