PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Catholic has announced the publication of the 2008 Diocese of Providence Directory.

For the first time, handicap-accessible churches are designated by the universal symbol of accessibility (a person using a wheelchair), while churches that offer special services for the deaf and hard of hearing are listed with the universal symbol for assistive learning systems (an ear with amplification).

“That’s a new feature this year,” said Marie Zagorsky, who edited and coordinated the 292-page directory assisted by Danuta Lesnikowski. Sections of the new publication highlight historical information and parish foundation dates, and include a necrology of all deceased diocesan and religious bishops and priests who have served in the diocese. A pastel drawing of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul graces the directory cover.

The new directory offers a comprehensive list of diocesan offices, officials, ministries and programs. Detailed information about 150 parishes, including administrative staff, Mass and confession schedules, and contacts for religious education programs are also listed.

Zagorsky noted that the last diocesan directory was published in late fall of 2006; and since that time, much of the information has changed.

Other features include an updated photo gallery of diocesan priests, information about diocesan, parish and religious order elementary and high schools, as well as colleges, and telephone directories for all priests, deacons and religious brothers and sisters serving or living in retirement in the diocese.

Advertisers are now listed alphabetically as well as by specialty.

The 2008 directory costs $30, plus $5 for shipping and handling. Copies may be obtained at Rhode Island Catholic office, 180 Broad Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903 or by calling 272-1010.
