PROVIDENCE—“There’s something extremely powerful about hearing ‘The Class of 2010,’” said St. Raphael Academy Valedictorian Joseph Mello, smiling proudly as he addressed his classmates at their graduation.
Dressed in yellow and purple caps and gowns, 114 graduates, their families and friends filled the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul on Sunday, June 13.
Students from the Class of 2010, the 83rd class to graduate from St. Raphael, have been accepted to some of the most prestigious universities and colleges in the country, including Brown University, St. John’s University, Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island to name a few. Seniors were offered scholarships totalling close to $2 million for a total of almost $8 million over a four-year college career.
Principal Michael Sweeney said that the graduates have taken to heart the words found in the Gospel of Matthew, performing four times the amount of Christian service hours that was asked of them, volunteering their time in their home parishes and communities.
“As a Lasallian school, we taught you that attending to those who are in need is of utmost importance,” Sweeney said. “I am confident that as you continue with your lives, you will take these lessons with you, and that we have prepared you for a life dedicated to learning, leadership and service to the church and its community.”
On behalf of his classmates, Salutatorian Zachary Burkett expressed his gratitude to the families of the graduates for their support and guidance that they needed to be successful at St. Raphael.
The parents of graduate Adrienne Corain of Rumford expressed their joy at their daughter’s achievement.
“It’s a very proud moment for us,” said Judy Corain. “She is our second child to graduate from St. Ray’s.”
“They have had a very good experience at St. Ray’s,” Dennis Corain said. “We are looking forward to a wonderful future for these graduates.”
As she helped her daughter graduate Danielle Gaboriault with last minute preparations, Sandra Gaboriault expressed that sending her daughter to St. Raphael was the right choice for their family.
“I am so proud of her,” she said. “I am very happy that I sent her here.”
Memories are what will keep the Saints spirit alive, said Mello, reminding his classmates that they have each contributed something to the Saints experience whether they know it or not.
“These are the people who will catch you when you fall and raise you up when you impress,” said Mello. “We all are now held together by a bond that will last a lifetime. We are the Class of 2010 and that will ring true forever.”
The Class of 2010 has been a motivated, spirited, and dedicated group, said Burkett, who shared that his fellow graduates will be leaving behind a legacy that will long be remembered in the years to come.
“I am proud to be a member of the Class of 2010,” he said. “I thank all of my classmates for accompanying me on this four- year journey.”
Principal Sweeney thanked the students for their commitment to their school and prayed that their experiences at St. Raphael Academy will help them to make future decisions grounded in the Gospel.
“It is important for all of you to embrace the tasks ahead of you, remembering who you were, who you have become and who you are called to be as members of our society and as children of God,” he said. “No matter where you go or whatever you do, you are always a member of our Lasallian and Saints family.”
