PORTSMOUTH – Almost 100 seventh and eighth grade students at St. Philomena School participated in this year’s school Science Fair on January 28. All projects were experiment based. Participation is required but each student chooses the level—state or school—at which he or she wants to enter.
Over sixty volunteer judges assisted from among the family and friends of the St. Philomena School community as well as from the nearby Raytheon Company.
Each student’s project is evaluated by three judges who rate it from Poor to Excellent in four categories: the poster and display—relevance to topic, visual impact; the experiment—logical hypothesis, design of experiment, validity of results and conclusion supported by results; the research paper—pertains to project and diversity of sources; and the oral presentation—confidence in knowledge of topic and ability to answer reasonable questions. Judges viewed projects and interviewed students throughout the duration of the day-long event.
Six students, three from each grade, were chosen to participate in the Rhode Island State Engineering and Science Fair where many St. Philomena students have garnered top honors in previous competitions.
The state fair will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28, at CCRI in Warwick.
