First graders at St. Margaret School in Rumford were this year’s winners of a schoolwide competition to raise the most canned goods to benefit the community food bank at Newman Church.

The entire school participated in the drive and raised more than 800 cans of food. The first grade class contributed the most to the total with more than 300 cans and celebrated their achievement with an ice cream party. The drive is part of the school’s annual celebration of the 100th day of school. In addition to the food drive, students participate in other activities to celebrate the school-year milestone. Each of the first graders designed imaginative art projects with any 100 things of their choosing, and used a variety of materials including beads, food, marbles, Lego blocks and candy. Students look forward to the celebration every year.
