Sister Winifred Marie Carey, RSM

CUMBERLAND — Sister Winifred Marie Carey, RSM, the former Sister Mary Annella, age 90, died at Mount St. Rita Health Centre on October 27. Born in the Fox Point section of Providence, she was a daughter of the late William and Anna (Langton) Carey. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Perry, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended members of the Carey and Langton families.

A Sister of Mercy for 73 years, “Winnie” ministered in the Diocese of Providence and in Honduras, Central America. She taught in parish schools in Westerly and East Greenwich for 13 years before journeying to Honduras where she ministered for a total of 11 years. During her years in Honduras, Sister became fluent in Spanish, was a school teacher and principal and helped to establish a college. In 1967, Sister returned to the United States where she ministered and studied for seven years before returning to Honduras for seven more years.

Prior to her move to Mount St. Rita Health Centre in 2006, Sister was active in ministry at St. Thomas Parish and school in North Providence, and at St. Teresa Parish in Providence. At Mount St. Rita, Sister, in her ministry of prayer and presence, has shared her gifts of kindness, humor and deep faith with staff, residents, the Mercy Community and all who were fortunate enough to meet her.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at St. John Vianney Parish, Cumberland. Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery in Cumberland.
