Sister Mary Sean Hurley, R.S.M., 84

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister Mary Sean Hurley, 84, a retired teacher and principal, died Jan. 7 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Baptized Regina Hurley in Fall River, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Kathleen (Conroy) Hurley. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1945 and professed her vows on August 16, 1951.

Sister Hurley was a graduate of the former Dominican Academy in Fall River, Mass. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, Conn. She began her educational ministry in the former St. Joseph School, Pawtucket, from 1948 to 1957, and then taught at the former St. Patrick School, Fall River, from 1957 to 1965, where she later returned as principal in 1972. She taught in other schools in both the Diocese of Providence and the Diocese of Fall River. From 1977 to 1996 she taught at St. Vincent School, Fall River. She retired in 1997.

Sister Hurley leaves three nieces. She was the sister of the late Marjorie Dorsey.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated January 11 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
