Sister Mary Gibson, PBVM

WORCESTER, Mass. – Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sister Mary Gibson, 84, formerly known as Sister Mary Rose, died July 12, at St. Mary Health Care Center.

Sister Gibson was born in Pawtucket, on May 11, 1928, a daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (McCarrion) Gibson.

She was a graduate of the former Sacred Heart High School, Pawtucket, and entered the Sisters of the Presentation in 1947, professing her final vows in 1952.

Sister Gibson received a bachelor’s degree in education from the former Regina Coeli College, Fitchburg, Mass., and a master’s degree in reading from Rhode Island College in 1973.

In addition to ministering at several Catholic schools in Massachusetts, Sister Gibson also taught at the former St. Benedict School in Warwick, former Sacred Heart School, Woonsocket, and the former Holy Trinity School and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Academy in Central Falls. From 2003 until the time of her retirement in 2006, she was a commissioner for the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development in Central Falls.

Sister Gibson is survived by a sister, Joan Robinson of Chicago, and two nieces. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Ann Benoit.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 14 in the Presentation Convent Chapel, Leominster, Mass. Burial was in St. Bernard Cemetery, Fitchburg.
