Sister Mary Eugena Poulin, 76

CUMBERLAND — Mercy Sister Mary Eugena Poulin, 76, a college professor, died August 28 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Baptized Simone Theresa Poulin in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Annette (Jean) Poulin. After graduating from St. Mary Academy-Bay View, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1951 and professed her vows on March 12, 1954.

Sister Poulin earned a bachelor’s degree from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence, a master’s degree from Assumption College, Worcester, MA and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. She taught in elementary schools in the Diocese of Providence until 1981, when she was assigned to Salve Regina College(now University), Newport, where she taught until last year.

She was an avid genealogist and her historical research led to her induction in the American-French Genealogical Hall of Fame in 2004.

She is survived by cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated August 30 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
