Sister Mary E. Curtis, R.S.M., 96

CUMBERLAND —?Mercy Sister Mary E. Curtis, 96, formerly Sister Mary Euphrasia, a retired secretary and educator, died June 15 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Born in East Providence, she was the daughter of the late George J. and Josephine V. (White) Curtis and was baptized Mary Elizabeth Curtis. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on February 2, 1931 and professed her vows on August 17, 1936, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Misericordia College in Pennsylvania, and master’s degrees from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and Providence College.

Sister Curtis was a secretary at the former St. Xavier Academy, Providence, and Salve Regina College (now University), Newport, and then taught religion at St. Mary Academy-Bay View, Riverside. She also taught adult religious education classes at St. Brendan Parish, Riverside, from 1989 to 1991.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Marjorie Clare Goodwin, Helen Sutton, and George J. Curtis Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 19 at Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
