Sister Mary Denisita Sullivan, RSM

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister Mary Denisita Sullivan, a retired teacher and religious education coordinator, died April 14 at Mount St. Rita Health Care Centre.

Baptized Katherine Virginia Sullivan in Fall River, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Dennis R. and Mary (McDonald) Sullivan. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1950 and professed her vows on Aug. 16, 1956. She was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Fall River, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Simmons College, Boston. She began her teaching career in Fall River. After she entered the Sisters of Mercy, she earned a master’s degree from Providence College.

Sister Sullivan began teaching at St. Mary Academy-Bay View in 1954, and was transferred the following year to Mount St. Mary Academy in Fall River, where she taught until 1977. She then began her religious education ministry at the former Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Swansea, Mass., where she served until her retirement in 2000.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 19 in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery, Fall River.
