Sister Mary Constance Monahan R.S.M., 101

CUMBERLAND — Mercy Sister Mary Constance Monahan, 101, a Sister of Mercy for 83 years, and a retired educator, music teacher and principal, died Feb. 18 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Born Hilda Monahan in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Edward J. and Elizabeth (McGrath) Monahan. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on June 24, 1926 and professed her vows on Dec. 27, 1931. Sister Monahan earned a bachelor of science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence and a master’s degree in education from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass. She also studied at Trinity College of Music, London, England.

Sister Monahan spent her entire ministry in education serving as a teacher and principal in schools in the Diocese of Fall River. She retired in 1981 after 53 years in education and later moved to Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

She is survived by nieces and nephews in Newfoundland. She was the sister of the late Ellen Dinn and Michael, John, and Edward Monahan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 23 at Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
