Sister Marjorie Furze, D.H.S., 85

PUTNAM, CONN. — Daughters of the Holy Spirit Sister Marjorie Furze, 85, died March 10 at the Holy Spirit Health Care Center where she had been a resident since 1984. She was formerly known as Sister Catherine de Notre Dame.

Sister Furze was born in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of the late Charles and Kathryn (Kennedy)?Furze. She entered religious life in 1949 and made her religious profession at the motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France on Aug. 23, 1951.

She earned a nursing diploma from the former St. Anne Hospital School of Nursing, Fall River, prior to entering the Daughters of the Holy Spirit. Her first assignment was in Hartford, Conn., where she ministered to the sick as a visiting nurse. In 1953 she became head nurse at the Villa St. Joseph, Putnam, a residence for retired and infirm sisters. Sister Furze served as a member of the Provincial Council from 1968-71, while continuing to minister at the Villa.

In 1975 she was assigned to serve as head nurse at St. Clare Home, Newport. She retired to Manchester, Conn, in 1998, and was assigned to Notre Dame Convent, Putnam in 2003. She became a resident of the Holy Spirit Health Care Center the following year.

Sister Furze is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 13 at the Holy Spirit Provincial House. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam.
