Sister Marie-Madeline Paradis, FMM, 89

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Sister Marie-Madeline Paradis, 89, Franciscan Missionary of Mary of the Ein Karim Community, died Friday, May 14, at St. Antoine’s Residence.

Sister Paradis entered the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary on January 10, 1940 in Quebec, Canada. She was sent to North Providence to complete her religious formation and pronounced her final vows in December, 1948.

She was a skilled seamstress and her ministries utilized this skill in communities in New York, Providence, Cincinnati, and Boston. She also did home visitation to the sick and elderly in North Providence, and taught religious education.

Later in life, Sister Paradis was sent in mission to Nairobi, Kenya where her ministry was one of welcoming and hospitality.

Returning to the U.S., she was sent in mission to Waukegan, Ill., where she assisted at the Center for the Poor. In 2004, she was sent in mission to the Trinity Community in Fruit Hill, North Providence. She used her sewing skill making goods for the annual bazaar and for the gift shop of the Franciscan Missionaries. She was active in the prayer group at St. Charles Borromeo in Providence.

Her final years were spent in prayer for the church and the world.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 17 at Holy Family Chapel. Burial was in Holy Family Cemetery.
