Sister M. Leontine Mulvenna RSM, 91

CUMBERLAND — Mercy Sister M. Leontine Mulvenna, 91, a retired principal and teacher, died August 20 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Baptized Margaret Mulvenna in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Griffin) Mulvenna. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on August 2, 1933 and professed her vows on August 15, 1939.

She was a graduate of the former Pawtucket High School and earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree, both in education, from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence. She completed additional studies at Rhode Island College and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.

During her 61-year long ministry as an educator in the Diocese of Providence, Sister Mulvenna served as principal of St. Patrick and Holy Ghost schools, Providence; Mercymount Country Day School, Cumberland; and St. Teresa School, Pawtucket. After she retired as an educator, she served in parish ministry at St. Teresa Parish for many years before her retirement in 1997.

Sister Mulvenna is survived by one niece, Laetitia Lennon. She was the sister of the late Jane, Helen, and Mary Mulvenna and Catherine Lennon.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated August 25 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
