Sister M. Gladys Sullivan, R.S.M., 83

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister M. Gladys Sullivan, 83, a retired educator and accountant, died April 11 at Mount St. Rita Health Care Centre.

Baptized Barbara Ann Sullivan in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Gladys (Cameron) Sullivan. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1952 and professed her perpetual vows on August 16, 1958.

Sister Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Master of Arts degree from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence, and Master of Science degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.

She began her education ministry at Our Lady of Mercy School, East Greenwich, and later taught at St. Philip School, Greenville; the former St. Patrick School, Cumberland; the former St. Aloysius Home, Greenville; the former Mount St. Mary Academy, Fall River, Mass.; St. Margaret School, Rumford; and the former St. Xavier Academy, Providence. After fifteen years of teaching, she was appointed a bookkeeper at Salve Regina University, and later served in the business office at St. Mary Academy-Bay View, and then at Femic Corporation, North Providence. Sister Sullivan continued to minister at St. Joseph Hospital-Fatima Unit.

Sister Sullivan is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edith Gately, Geneva Meany, Lois Bruzzi, Shirley Gretchner, and Raymond, Russell, Walter, and William Sullivan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 14 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
