Sister M. Emily Shanley

CUMBERLAND — Mercy Sister M. Emily Shanley, a retired educator and college president, died November 17 at Mount St. Rita Health Care Centre.

Born in Providence, she was baptized Evelyn Elizabeth Shanley. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Earley) Shanley.

Sister Shanley entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1934 and professed her vows on March 12, 1937. She taught at the former St. Xavier Academy, Providence from 1944-1958, and then was assigned to Mount St. Rita Convent as superior.

She served as superior of Salve Regina Convent, Newport from 1961-1964, and was appointed President of Salve Regina College in 1965. She became superior of St. Mary Convent-Bay View in 1969 and remained there in administrative positions until 1987, when she joined the St. Mary Academy-Bay View faculty. Sister Shanley retired in 1992.

In addition to her religious community, she is survived by a sister, Mercy Sister M. Marcella Shanley of Bristol. She was the sister of the late Father Joseph Shanley.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated November 21 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
