Sister M. Agnes McHale, I.H.M., 89

CARBONDALE, PENN. — Servant of The Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister M. Agnes McHale, 89, died Oct. 12 at the Marian Community Hospital.

Born on September 12, 1921 in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Leo and Alice McCarthy McHale.

She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1939 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1942 and final profession of vows on August 2, 1945.

Sister McHale ministered in the Diocese of Providence at St. Paul Elementary School, Cranston, from 1942 to 1943, as well as in elementary schools conducted by her congregation in New York, Connecticut, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

She also served as principal at St. Ann’s Elementary School, Devon, Conn., from 1972 to 1978 and at Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School, Scranton, Penn., from 1978 to 1980.

Sister McHale also served as a library assistant at Bishop Hafey High School, Hazleton, PA, from 1996 to 2000.

She was an assistant at the IHM Art Studio, Scranton, PA, from 2000-2002; and a receptionist at the IHM Center, Scranton, PA, from 2002-2005.

From 2005 until the time of her death, Sister McHale served as a prayer minister at the MaConvent and at Our Lady of Peace Residence, Scranton.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Marywood College, Scranton, and a master of education degree in elementary administration from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. Penn.

She is survived by a brother Jerome of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and a sister Marie Sullivan of Girard, OH, and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 15 at Our Lady of Peace Residence, Scranton. Burial was in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
