Sister Kathleen Schmith


CUMBERLAND - Mercy Sister Kathleen Schmith, 74, formerly known as Sister Mary Carolita, died Jan. 21 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre. Baptized Kathleen Theresa Schmith in Providence, she was the daughter of the late George and Kathleen (Goulding) Schmith.She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1951, and professed her vows on March 12, 1954. She earned a bachelor's degree from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence, and a master's degree from Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, Wis.She taught at Our Lady of Mercy School, East Greenwich; the former St. Edward School, Providence; and St. Mary School, Pawtucket; as well as in schools in the Diocese of Fall River, Mass. She also served in campus ministry at St. Mary Academy-Bay View, East Providence, and as the administrator of Mercy Lodge, Cumberland.Sister Schmith also served as a pastoral minister in New York, and served in the chaplain's office at St. Luke Hospital, New Bedford, Mass., from 1992-2006. Sister Schmith is survived by a sister, Carol McDade of Monroe, Conn.; and a brother, Dennis Schmith. She was the sister of the late George Schmith.A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 23 in the Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
