Sister Joan Marie Mulligan, R.S.M.

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister Joan Marie Mulligan, 83, formerly Sister M. Francelyn, a long time educator, died Oct. 8 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Welch) Mulligan. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1948, and professed her perpetual vows on August 16, 1954.

Sister Mulligan was a graduate of St. Xavier Academy, Class of 1948. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence.

Sister Mulligan began her teaching ministry in 1951 at St. Mary Academy – Bay View Elementary School and in 1955 was appointed to the former St. Patrick School, Providence. In 1960 she was transferred to St. James School, West Warwick and then in 1962 to St. Augustine School, Newport. In 1964 Sister Mulligan was appointed to teach at St. Edward School, now Woodlawn Catholic Regional School, Pawtucket, and in 1968 she began her ministry at the former St. Mary School, Pawtucket, where she remained for 32 years.

She was the sister of the late Hope LoBello and John Mulligan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 11 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
