NORTH SMITHFIELD — Holy Union Sister Irene Rita Fontaine, 94, of St. Antoine Residence died on August 6.
Born in Pawtucket, she was baptized Rita Fontaine, and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Julie (Pion) Fontaine, She is survived by a sister, Irene Fontaine.
Sister Fontaine graduated from the former St. John the Baptist Academy, Pawtucket. She entered the Holy Union Sisters in Fall River, Mass. on January 24, 1936, and pronounced her final vows on August 15, 1943.
In the Diocese of Providence, she ministered as principal of the former St. John the Baptist School, Pawtucket and then moved to Woodlawn Catholic Regional School. From 1976 until she retired, she ministered at St. Raphael Academy, Pawtucket, first as librarian and then as assistant to the guidance director.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated August 10 in the chapel of the St. Antoine Residence. Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket.
