RHINEBECK, N.Y. — Sister Gloria Mooney, SU, 88, a Sister of the Society of Saint Ursula for 72 years died peacefully on February 20, 2018 at Thompson House-Hudson Valley Hospice, in Rhinebeck, New York, surrounded by members of her community, family and friends.
Sister Gloria, formerly known as Mother Mary Lawrence, was born Gloria W. Mooney on June 14, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, to the late John Joseph Mooney and Elizabeth (Grey) Mooney. Sister Gloria graduated from the Academy of St. Ursula, Kingston, New York, and entered the Society of St. Ursula in 1946, professing first vows in 1948 and final vows in 1953. She earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Catholic Teachers’ College, Providence, Rhode Island, and Fordham University, and studied at Marquette University, Boston College, University of Notre Dame and Iona College.
Before being called to leadership positions in the Society of St. Ursula, Sister Gloria was a teacher at the Academy of St. Ursula and St. Joseph School, Kingston; St. Augustine School, Providence; Notre Dame School, N.Y.C.; and St. Gregory the Great School, Milwaukee. She was principal of the Academy of St. Ursula, Kingston; and St. Gregory the Great School, Milwaukee.
Sister Gloria served as Director of Novices and as Regional Superior for the U.S. Region. She was a councilor on the Regional Council and the General Council and was Regional Treasurer. She served in ministry at Linwood Spiritual Center, Rhinebeck, New York. She was on the staff of the Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Services in East Harlem, New York. Most recently, Sister Gloria served as community Archivist and moderator of the Alumnae Association of the Academy of St. Ursula (Marygrove).
In addition to her religious family, the Sisters of Saint Ursula, Sister Gloria is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Alice Mooney, SU, of Rhinebeck; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Mooney and a sister, Sister Elizabeth Mooney, OP.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on February 27 at the chapel of Linwood Spiritual Center, Rhinebeck. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston.
