Sister Evelyn O'Gara, R.S.M.
CUMBERLAND — Mercy Sister Evelyn O'Gara, 87, formerly Sister M. Martin, a retired educator, died June 5 at Mount St. Rita Health Center, Cumberland.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late James and Kathryn (Ganley) O'Gara. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1939 and professed her vows on August 16, 1945. She earned a bachelor's degree in Education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence and master's degree in education from Boston College.
Sister O’Gara taught in the elementary schools of the Diocese of Providence for 35 years and was later appointed to Mount St. Rita Health Centre as a staff member and volunteer services coordinator. She retired in 1993.
She was the sister of the late Shirley O'Gara Toye. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 9 at Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
