Sister Dorothy Maloney, R.S.M., 71

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister Dorothy Maloney, 71, an educator, hospital chaplain and psychotherapist, died Aug. 22 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the Mary (Young) Paradis of Pawtucket, and the late Edward Maloney and stepdaughter of the late Ernest Paradis. Sister Maloney entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1964 and professed her perpetual vows on Oct. 28, 1973.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the former Mount St. Mary College, Hooksett, N.H., a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Emmanuel College, Boston, Mass., and a doctor of ministry degree from Barrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Ill.

Sister Maloney taught in Diocese of Manchester, N.H., from 1966 to 1979, then served as a pastoral associate before serving as hospital chaplain at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa. She also offered psychotherapy at the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center, then at the Manchester Mental Health Center. From 1998 to 2008, she served as a counselor at Salve Regina University, Newport.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sisters, Carol A. Beagan of Glocester, and Kathleen Pastore of Florida; a brother, Robert Maloney of Florida; and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 25 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
