Sister Barbara Marie Murphy R.S.M, 81

CUMBERLAND — Mercy Sister Barbara Marie Murphy, 81, formerly Sister Mary DePaul, a retired educator, died April 15 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Baptized Barbara Neylon Murphy, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Alice (Lyons) Murphy. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1945 and professed her vows on Aug. 16, 1951.

She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College, Providence, and pursued additional studies at Rhode Island College.

Sister Murphy taught at several elementary schools in the Diocese of Providence for 49 years, and completed her ministry as an educator at St. Mary School, Pawtucket, where she taught for 27 years.

Upon retirement in 1997, she volunteered at Our Lady of Mercy School, East Greenwich; and St. Kevin School, Warwick.

She was the sister of Father William F. Murphy of Providence.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 17 in the chapel of St. Mary Academy-Bay View, Riverside.

Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
