Sister Althea Marie Margeson, R.S.M.

CUMBERLAND – Mercy Sister Althea Marie Margeson, 86, formerly Sister M. Irenes, a retired educator, physical therapist and advocate for the poor, died Nov. 30 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre.

Baptized Althea Margeson, she was born in Islington, Mass., and was the daughter of the late Charles and Alice (Morrison) Margeson.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Feb. 2, 1947 and professed her vows on March 12, 1954. Sister Margeson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence, and in 1945 she gained certification in physical therapy from the Massachusetts School of Physiotherapy in Boston. Her educational ministry began at the former St. Joseph School, Fall River, Mass., in 1949. She subsequently taught at the former St. Anthony School, West Warwick, and the former St. Mary School, Pawtucket. In 1968 she began her ministry of physical therapy at Pine Harbor School in Pascoag and then taught special needs children at the former Nazareth School, Attleboro, Mass. In 1983 she moved to the House of Faith at St. Patrick Parish, Providence, where she remained for many years serving those less fortunate.

Sister Margeson is survived by two nieces. She was the sister of the late George M. Margeson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 5 in Mount St. Rita Chapel. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
